Date: 28 January 2025

An off duty, senior paramedic from Hertfordshire has received a Royal Humane Society award for his actions which helped to save a man's life in May last year.

Rob Allmey received a Resuscitation Certificate from the Royal Humane Society for the actions he took when he came across a man who collapsed on a road in Letchworth.

Rob was travelling home from a night shift on 5 May 2024 when he noticed two people helping a man on the floor. Rob pulled over to see if he could assist.

The man was in cardiac arrest and Rob immediately began CPR while a bystander called 999. He was soon joined by a police officer who had received a GoodSam app notification from the ambulance control room, and another bystander who got a community defibrillator.

An ambulance crew arrived on the scene and began further life-saving interventions. The man regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital for treatment. He has since fully recovered.

Rob said: "I am incredibly humbled to receive this award, along with everyone else who helped the patient in those vital first few minutes. I was just doing my job and what any other paramedic would have done. This incident highlights the importance of starting CPR early, having access to community defibrillators, and how members of the public can make a real difference in a medical emergency.

"I was pleased to meet the patient a few months later, so it was a really positive outcome."

Sandra Treacher, Head of Clinical Operations for Hertfordshire and West Essex at EEAST, said: "All of us in the ambulance service are proud of Rob for receiving this award from the Royal Humane Society. His quick-thinking and life-saving actions undoubtedly helped to save the man’s life. Thank you to the members of the public and the police officer who all worked together to achieve this amazing result."

Rob was presented with a Resuscitation Certificate from the Royal Humane Society at Hertfordshire Constabulary headquarters on 3 December 2024, along with the police officer who attended the emergency and the members of the public who were first to assist the patient.
