Learn to ‘Restart a Heart’ and save lives
Date: 7 October 2024The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) and its partners are holding a series of events to teach the public life-saving skills for Restart a Heart Day on Wednesday 16 October 2024.

EEAST responds to around 4,000 patients in cardiac arrest each year and good-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation, better known as CPR, greatly increases a patient’s chances of survival.
Survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK remain stubbornly low, with fewer than one in 10 people surviving.
Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces a person’s chance of survival by 10% which demonstrates the importance of early CPR by members of the public.
At the events the public will learn what to do if they encounter a person in cardiac arrest, how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator.
This should give the public confidence to know what to do in this most time critical of medical emergencies.
Jonathan Needle, Community Response Manager at EEAST, said:
“We are hoping to train life-saving skills to as many people as possible at the events we are holding for Restart a Heart Day.
“By learning CPR you can help improve survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests which are way below what they should be in the UK.
“80 per cent of cardiac arrests happen at home so learning CPR could mean that you are helping a loved one’s chances of survival.”
