Exceptional Emergency Medical Dispatcher wins prestigious award

Date: 22 October 2024

An exceptional emergency medical dispatcher (EMD) who has helped thousands of people with “unwavering compassion and commitment” during a 15-year career has won a prestigious award.

Annette Clark with her award

Annette Clark, who is based in the Emergency Operations Centre in Hellesdon, was awarded the EMD of the Year at the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) Awards.

Annette’s colleagues Edward Collop and Matthew Holgate were finalists for the award which was presented at a ceremony in Leeds.

In addition to her award, Annette also received a Diamond Call Handling Compliance Award which recognises her excellence in handling 999 calls.

In an audit of 999 calls, Annette achieved over 500 highly compliant calls which is a record number at EEAST.

The annual International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) Awards offer an opportunity for control room staff from across the UK and Ireland to exchange best practices.

The awards recognise individuals who exemplify leadership, going above and beyond under pressure while navigating complex situations.

Annette Clark said:

“Receiving this award is truly an honour and I know how competitive the award was from the calibre of my colleagues who were nominated.

“I’m proud to work in a job which makes such a difference to patients’ lives every day.

“When I first began in 2009, I was stepping in to a world I knew nothing about. I was wanting to be a part of something meaningful, for my work to have purpose. All of this I've done in more ways than I could ever have imagined, so coming this far and winning EMD of the year means so much to me.

"I would also like to say thank you to my colleagues who not only guided and supported me but have also become true friends.”

Liam Walker, Senior Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Manager for Training and Education said:

“Annette is one of our exceptional EMDs, having dedicated over 15 years to the Trust. Throughout her career in the EOC, she has delivered babies, saved lives, and supported patients during their most challenging moments with unwavering compassion and commitment. She is an invaluable asset to EEAST and embodies our values every day.”

Deputy Chief of Clinical Operations, Rachael Edwards said:

“Congratulations to Annette and all our finalists, who should take pride in their achievements. They are a testament to EEAST. Our EOC teams work tirelessly and often find themselves during their communities' darkest moments.

To be recognized by the IAED and to receive a Diamond Call Handling Compliance Award is remarkable, and I am proud of Annette. Thank you for choosing a career in our EOC.”
