EEAST wins contract to continue paramedic services at Stansted Airport
Date: 26 March 2024The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) has been awarded the contract to continue to provide paramedic services at Stansted Airport.
EEAST were successful in a competitive procurement process for the five-year contract for first aid and an emergency response service at the UK’s fourth busiest airport.
Having robust medical provision is essential for the day-to-day operation at Stansted Airport which saw just shy of 28 million passengers in 2023 – its third busiest year on record.
Those passenger numbers showed the airport has made a good recovery from the coronavirus pandemic which significantly impacted the aviation industry.
At the height of pandemic, when demand for flights was significantly reduced, EEAST reached an agreement with the airport to pause the contract until restrictions were eased and passenger numbers started to increase.
Passenger numbers are forecast to increase further in the coming years and there is provision for this in the new contract which starts on 1 May 2024.
During the busiest periods from May to September, the level of cover can be increased from the current 18 hours a day to round-the-clock provision.
One or two crews made up of paramedics and emergency medical technicians are based at the airport every day. They are deployed by the airport control room to attend any incidents on the airport estate that require medical attention.
Kate Vaughton, director of integration and deputy chief executive at EEAST, said: “It is great news we will be continuing to provide paramedic services at Stansted Airport.
“To secure the contract after a competitive procurement process is testament to the service we have provided at Stansted Airport over the last six years.
“We look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with Stansted Airport and its operator, Manchester Airport Group.”
