The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) has been awarded the ability to train and assess apprenticeships after three years of improvements.

The Trust has been approved for the Apprenticeship Provider and Assessment Register (APAR) scheme three years after it was deregistered when it was placed in special measures in 2022.

The scheme recognises EEAST as a trusted provider of high-quality apprenticeship programmes and assessment services.

This means that the Trust is now able to deliver government-approved apprenticeship standards across a range of roles, which allows the Trust to support career progression and develop a highly skilled workforce.

The first cohort is due to start their training as apprentice emergency care assistants in April.

Anthony Kitchener, Deputy Director for Education at EEAST, said APAR status had been removed when the Trust was in special measures in 2022.

He said:

“We have worked closely with external stakeholders, including professional bodies and regulatory organisations, to ensure that our apprenticeship programmes align with the most up-to-date standards in healthcare education and workforce development.

“Restarting our internal apprenticeships will secure much needed revenue to help develop the required educational support structures, particularly in our clinical operational settings.

“This commitment to apprenticeship excellence will help fill the growing demand for skilled professionals in emergency care, ensuring that patients across the East of England continue to receive the highest standard of care.”

Key improvements made during the past three years include enhancing the mentorship and support provided to apprentices, ensuring that every individual has access to the right guidance at each stage of their training.
