With the autumn season in full swing, Halloween is just around the corner. Whatever your plans may be, it’s important to stay safe and avoid any unnecessary scares!

We’ve compiled some top tips on how to stay safe and vigilant this spooky season:

  • Never walk near lit candles or flames and be sure to check your costume is flame-resistant! Check for a UKCA or UKNI mark on the label, especially with children’s costumes – find out more on ROSPA’s website.

  • Try and use face paint or make-up as opposed to a mask, which can restrict how much you can see.

  • If you are using face paint or make-up, carry out a patch test on a small area of skin in advance to check you’re not allergic to anything.

  • Always make sure children are accompanied by an adult or in a group. Never let them go out alone.

  • Ensure you can be seen in the dark by wearing something reflective or carrying a torch or glowstick so you’re visible to drivers and other pedestrians.

  • Prevent trips and falls by walking rather than running, as some costumes can restrict movement!

  • Always check any treats you’re given in case of potential choking hazards or tampering; also check for any allergens.

  • In all the excitement, don’t forget road safety – be careful and look both ways when crossing the road and stick to the pavements.

  • Only go to houses that are well lit – chances are if someone’s house is in darkness, they aren’t welcoming spooky visitors.

  • Try and stick to trick-or-treating in an area you know well, so you will be able to easily navigate in the dark er evenings.

What’s most important is having fun but keeping safe.
